Job Summary-Assistant Producer Job Description

This job principally involves working on all programmes as well as outside broadcasts mounted by the department. The successful candidate will also be expected to work in multi-platform teams across the company.

The successful candidate will work alone and as part of a large team delivering programme material to the specification of Producers and Editors. This work will often be unsupervised at times and requires a large degree of responsibility
 and common sense combined with the high editorial and production values expected by the company.

Main responsibilities-Assistant Producer Job Description

 To watch and log accurately sporting action, identifying what is important or useful; either as pre-recorded material, or live, or on site at an Outside Broadcast.

To work in conjunction with a VT Editor, to edit highlights of sporting action into complete programmes, or programme inserts.

To direct a single camera crew or operate a DV camera on location and produce a reporter/presenter both on location as well as during scripting and dubbing in order to make feature material within Network Television Sport and across all Sport platforms.

To supervise the playing of slow motion replays either live at an OB. or in the studio.

To initiate and implement programme ideas where a high degree of original contribution is required; working both individually and with others to conceive, generate and develop ideas, treatments and formats of the highest quality consistent with departmental strategy and commissioning requirements.

 
To research and where necessary record programme material, including visiting location and meeting potential contributors, using editorial judgement to select the best material and writing briefs for the producer. To evaluate and compile information from a variety of sources including the Internet. To be responsible for a moving story, following coverage, amending, updating material as required. To be responsible for thinking through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.

To find and brief contributors and conduct interviews as required and on occasions write scripts for transmission.

Assistant Producers will be expected to decide what facilities are required for their assignments and in association with senior producers and production assistants, make sure that the correct facilities are booked. At all times they will be expected to have a keen awareness of budgetary issues and take responsibility for delivering items on time and to budget

Assistant producers must adhere to Editorial Guidelines and Industry Codes of Practice and be responsible for ensuring safe working practices and the observance of Health and Safety Regulations. APs will be the first referral point for legal and editorial queries and be responsible for obtaining the necessary rights and permission as appropriate to the production(s) in hand

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities-Assistant Producer Job Description

Professional full time experience as a Sports Journalist/Producer in Sports Production including live broadcasting plus proven editorial judgement. It is desirable for the majority of this experience to have been in television but a good knowledge of all other platforms is also an advantage.

Well developed organisational skills, and the ability to maintain a high standard of performance whilst under pressure.

Good team-working skills both as a team leader and a team player.

Good knowledge of British mainstream and world sport.

They should also be aware of the particular needs of the audience and public service remit.

Through trailing or research, candidates should gain insight into the production methods made as well as an awareness of the latest technology applicable to broadcasting.

Some level of computer literacy would be an advantage.
