This is a new post for a consultant with an interest in breast surgery and the post holder will form part of a team of two
full time Breast Surgeons supported by 4 surgeons with an interest in breast surgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to have undergone one year working 50% of the time for a surgeon with an interest
in breast disease plus 12 months working in a dedicated specialist breast unit.
1. The post holder will be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible with General Surgery colleagues for the provision of outpatient and inpatient services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust.
2. The post holder will aim to deliver high quality care with the help of the existing surgical team.
3. The post holder will assist consultant colleagues in the continued development of a consultant led approach to Breast Surgery.
4. The post holder will share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate.
5. The job plan may be open to change in accordance with the needs of the service.
6. The post holder will observe and comply with clinical and non clinical policies and procedures (including local and national employment and personnel policies) agreed with employees and management. In particular, the post holder will be responsible for updating policies and guidelines for the General Surgery service along with colleagues, which should be reviewed annually.
7. The post holder will be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues.
Job Description Breast Surgeon
The post holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them.
The post holder will devote time to this activity on a regular basis and may be named in the contracts of training grade doctors as a first point of contact for education supervision, appraisal and career advice. The post holder will be responsible for supervising the education of medical students attached to the department.
The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with developments within the speciality by attending appropriate conferences and study courses.
RESEARCH
There are ample opportunities and facilities for research, which is supported locally through the Research and Development Committee.
CONTINUING CARE
The appointee will be responsible for the continuing care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of his/her department.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
All consultants are required to attend the monthly directorate meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative
duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate.

The post holder, in common with all posts in the Trust, will participate in the Trust`s appraisal process.
SAFE AND EFFECTIVE CARE FOR PATIENTS
The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for patients. To ensure this there is an agreed procedure for medical staff that enables them to report quickly and confidentially, concerns about the conduct, performance or health of medical colleagues (Chief Medical Officer 1996).
All medical staff practising in the Trust should ensure that they are familiar with the procedure and should apply it.

Experience-Essential
Expected to be able to deal with a wide variety of breast conditions (both elective and emergency)
Breast surgery skills including management of screen detected lesions
Experience and documented training in sentinel node biopsy
Experience and documented training in breast reconstruction.
Experience in a multidisciplinary breast team environment
Qualifications
Job Description Breast Surgeon Essential
MB ChB, FRCS or FRCS intercollegiate or equivalent.
Professional occupational qualifications
CCST/ CCT and entry on Specialist Register (or expected within 6 months)
Full registration with GMC
Training-Essential
One year working 50% of the time for a surgeon with an interest in breast disease plus 12 months working in a dedicated specialist breast unit.
Training courses in advanced breast surgery and in breast reconstruction.
Professional interests-Essential
