To highlight any error conditions arising from the mainframes, the servers, the associated networks, software and applications are addressed by initial analysis and recovery action and, if necessary, by calling on specialist support and engineers; also to ensure that such incidents are properly documented and that users are kept informed of their effects.
To prepare, plan, run and dispatch regular and ad hoc batch jobs, to ensure that customers are supplied with the correct data regarding records and usage of the computer systems. The post holder must always scrutinize and check carefully and methodically that all incoming requests from Customers are correct and specific to their expected requirements.
To provide support for the running of an out of hours Service Desk, ensuring that enquiries and faults are logged and actioned promptly and to notify Customers with regular updates and resolutions.
In the absence of the Shift Team Leader, provide Line management duties to the operations team, monitoring technical expertise within the team to ensure that it meets the changing demands.
Out of hours (i.e for more than 75% of the average working week) the jobholder assists the approppriate manager with responsibility for building and mainframe security, supervision of visitors, responses to incidents, and ensuring that incoming shifts are properly staffed.
Makes regular use of written guides and scripts for operations area which have been provided by the technical support teams ensuring that scripts that are accurate, understandable and comprehensive at all times.
Provides technical and operational expertise and advice to resolve all queries to Customers and colleagues` satisfaction

Educated to A Level standard (or equivalent) and sound knowledge and experience in computer mainframe and associated system software.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal). The post holder must be able to demonstrate the ability to produce concise reports and explanatory documentation when required for all Customers (internal and external). The post holder must also have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate easily, demonstrating sound negotiating skills and excellent clarity at all times.
Problem solving skills. The post holder is required to contribute to the identification of technical faults affecting the live delivery of service and apply the scripted solutions. The post holder is also required to contribute to the identification of software faults and any administration errors included in Customer requests that may affect day to day batch and media process.
Decision making. The post holder is required to demonstrate reliable judgment and willingness to exercise initiative in critical operational situations. The post holder must also demonstrate sound judgment in the interpretation of data and to formulate logical assumptions supported by common sense and reason.
The post holder must be able to work a defined shift pattern of 3 x 12.5hrs (including nights) to maintain the live Service.
Confident, diplomatic and tactful: The post holder is required to develop good `face to face` working partnerships with technical and service management teams in order to understand and disseminate knowledge to them.
