Consultant Nurse in Rheumatology
The purpose of the post is to lead in the development of an advanced/expert specialist service in Rheumatology that has a consistent and sustainable impact on the experience of patients and carers, as appropriate across the Trust.
Key responsibilities include:
1. To improve standards and outcomes of specialist care by facilitating the development of practice and strengthening leadership to ensure that Rheumatology patients and carers have a quality experience, and to reduce risk and increase safety for staff and patients
2. To line manage, oversee and support the specialist nurses in Rheumatology in the development and implementation of a consistent and effective specialist service

Advanced/ Expert Clinical Practice Function

1. To work as a nursing expert in the area of Rheumatology performing advanced clinical assessment and interventions. A minimum of 50% time will be spent in clinical practice
2. To oversee the management of the clinical caseloads of the Specialist Nurses in Rheumatology and to oversee the planning and evaluation of care which addresses patients` complex and changing health care needs at all stages of their rheumatological illness/disease
3. To provide expert advice and support to multi-professional teams to improve the way in which the Rheumatology service is provided, including ongoing referral to other services as appropriate
4. To provide expert advice to support ward staff when patients are referred to Rheumatology, ensuring all medical and nursing needs are understood and carried out in accordance with national and Trust guidelines
5. To be a nurse prescriber within Rheumatology as/ if determined by service need and in consultation with the Non Medical Prescribing Group and to act as a resource for clinicians in relation to rheumatological treatment and care
6. To work in partnership with service users to enable them to make informed
choices about their care and treatment wherever possible
7. Accountable for achieving rigorous adherence to infection control safety practices including hand hygiene and universal precautions
Education, Training, Research and Development

* -initiating admission of patients to hospital or discharge from secondary
