To assist, under supervision, with routine duties of a technical nature, including the dispensing and supply of medication to specific patients.
KEY RESULT AREAS
• To dispense & self-check medication for patients, ready to receive a final accuracy check.
• To participate in the medication supply and topping-up service at ward/team base level, when required, to ensure adequate stocks are maintained for patient care
• To participate within the pharmacy, when necessary, with the receipt, processing, storage and stock control of medicines and other supplies and invoicing support for the Pharmacy Team Secretary.
• To participate in the supply of clozapine to patients under the guidance of the Senior Technician (Patient Services) according to SOPs.
• To issue dispensed medication to patients, carers or staff.
• To respond to enquiries and requests from staff, patients and carers, in accordance with individual competence and departmental policy.
• To top-up, assemble and replace expired pharmaceuticals in the emergency equipment pouches for ILS bags according to SOP.
• To train dispensary staff on rotation and locums or other agency staff in the routine duties of the dispensary.
• To use pharmacy and other computer systems in the course of performing these duties.
• To cover for the Pharmacy Assistant in their absence.
• To ensure patient & carer information is readily available
• To be responsible for efficient and safe organisation and workflow in the dispensary
Training and Development
1. To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by policy.
2. To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal.
3. To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP).
GENERAL
• This is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities, and the postholder may be required to undertake other duties which fall within the grade of the job, in discussion with the manager.
• This job description will be reviewed regularly in the light of changing service requirements and any such changes will be discussed with the postholder.
• The postholder is expected to comply with all relevant policies, procedures and guidelines, including those relating to Equal Opportunities and Confidentiality of Information.
• The postholder is responsible for ensuring that the work that they undertake is conducted in a manner which is safe to themselves and others, and for adhering to the advice and instructions on Health and Safety matters given by Manager(s). If postholders consider that a hazard to Health and Safety exists, it is their responsibility to report this to their manager(s).
• The postholder is expected to comply with the appropriate Code(s) of Conduct associated with this post.
• It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the ’s environmental impact by recycling wherever possible, switching off lights, computer monitors and equipment when not in use, minimising water usage and reporting faults promptly.
• Basic general education
• Either/or
o Successful achievement of relevant units of Pharmacy Service Skills NVQ level 2 (QCF)
o Successful achievement of relevant units of a GPhC accredited training programme of an equivalent level to Pharmacy Service Skills NVQ level 2 (QCF)
EXPERIENCE
• Recent experience of working in a pharmacy as a qualified Dispensing Assistant
• Experience of dispensing prescriptions
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Good communication skills – both oral and written
• Good organisational skills, able to meet targets & deadlines
• Ability to work under supervision, in a team and independently, as appropriate
• Good interpersonal skills
• Good aptitude for, and ability to use computers
• Knowledge of our business and how it supports patient care
