A hospital job for a doctor specialising in ophthalmology. Job purpose is to provide day surgery, inpatient and emergency cover. The ophthalmology unit provides a consultant led teaching hospital standard of service locally to the patients in the area. Also provide a number of community children’s eye clinics which are run in close conjunction with the hospital department.
MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST
Clinical
• The post holder will perform roles in clinic, theatre and the Eye Emergency department as well as laser sessions
• The post holder will work in the Eye Emergency department, providing senior medical staff input into the work of the department and participate in a Friday afternoon cover
• The post holder will be expected to be involved in weekly teaching and audit sessions for which the post holder will have a designated session. The post holder will be committed to be involved in all forms of audit and clinical governance carried out in the Department.
• The post holder will have an obligation to be involved in the teaching and training of all grades of staff within the Department as is deemed appropriate and agreed with the Head of Service. The post holder will have no out of hours on call commitment within the agreed sessions.
• The post holder will be expected to work flexibly and cover other designated areas as agreed by the Head of Service. Any permanent change of job plan to include an on-call commitment will be mutually agreed with the post holder and the Head of Service.
• The post holder will have an appropriate level of training and abilities as are deemed necessary to functions of the post. The post holder will comply with all standards of Trust instructions concerning medical staff.
• It is expected that the post holder will contribute in the development and delivery of the Eye Casualty service.
Administration and management
Specialist Doctors are expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinical departments and take an active part in the running of the department, teaching etc. The post holders will be appraised annually and will be able to discuss educational and personal development plans with their supervising consultants or the Clinical Lead as required.
Research
Existing special interests in the department include medical retina & diabetes, paediatrics, cataract, neuro-ophthalmology, vitreo-retinal, ARMD, HIV, glaucoma, oculoplastics & adnexal and corneal. Post holders will be encouraged to participate in research, projects, etc.
CPD
Post holders will be expected to attend appropriate teaching & courses to maintain up to date CPD. Study leave will be granted according to Whitley Council agreements for Staff Grade posts (10 days per year or 30 days in 3 years). The Royal Free Hospital Medical School has a well stocked medical Library and the department has a library of ophthalmology texts available at the Royal Free site. There is a regular postgraduate teaching session each week.
Teaching
All medical staff are expected to share responsibility for general teaching in ophthalmology (eg nurses, GPT’s, junior ST’s, optometrists, orthoptists and other visiting doctors) which takes place on all sites and to take part in organized postgraduate education.
Audit
There is an established clinical audit system in the Trust involving all the staff. The appointees will be expected to show a strong commitment to the continued development of medical audit in the speciality.
Clinical Governance
The post holders must comply with the Trust’s clinical governance requirements and participate in related initiatives where appropriate. This will include participating in clinical audit and review of outcomes, working towards achievement of national and local performance management targets, complying with risk management policies, and participating in the appraisal process.
Full GMC Registration
DRCOphth, MRCOphth, FRCOphth or equivalent
Experience
A minimum of three years as ophthalmic SHO or higher grade since registration
Clinical Skills
Experience working in busy outpatients & accident & emergency. Ability to work/operate unsupervised
Research and Audit
Awareness of audit requirements
Previous participation in audit
