The post is for a full-time Speciality Doctor in Rehabilitation Psychiatry providing services for clients primarily experiencing a severe and enduring psychosis. You will be involved in the implementation of New Ways of Working for Psychiatrists and will require excellent leadership and team building skills as well as wide clinical experience and educational ability.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE POST
To act as Medical Officer for all in-patients under the care of the Psychiatry Service. There will also be responsibility for patients in the community under the care of the Rehabilitation Psychiatry Service.
7.2 The post-holder will be expected to undertake a full medical assessment, perform mental state and, where appropriate, physical examination and be actively involved in the assessment and management of all patients under their care. The post holder will be responsible for accurate documentation of information obtained and the preparation of appropriate clinical summaries. All patients under the care of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service will be reviewed on a regular basis and these reviews will be documented.
Obtaining a general medical history and full physical examination on
admission, addressing patients’ on-going physical health needs, and ordering and reviewing appropriate blood tests and other investigations as required.
The post-holder will be expected to be involved in multi-disciplinary team meetings and out-patient clinics, and to lead the MDTs in the Consultant’s absence. He/She will be expected to attend and contribute to regular multi-disciplinary case reviews and conferences, CPA/117 meetings and discharge planning meetings, leading such events as required.
He/She will conduct, and regularly review, assessment of risk with patients and determine/agree management strategies to reduce risks.
The post-holder will be encouraged to maintain a holistic view of patients’ care and consider physical, psychological and social aspects of the patients’ wellbeing. This will include being actively involved in the patients’ recovery, developing relapse prevention strategies, empowering patients towards making positive choices and facilitating social inclusion.
He/She will communicate and liaise with relatives and carers, and other disciplines and agencies as appropriate. He/She will liaise with other rehabilitation and continuing care facilities and units as appropriate, and provide assessment and advice as required.
He/She will be actively involved in assessment of referrals to the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service. The Service functions as a tertiary service, therefore, most referrals are received from Consultant colleagues. Most new referrals are assessed at the place of their current residence and, if accepted, accepted to an in-patient part of the Service. Referrals from the Early Intervention Team or Community Assertive Outreach patient are seen in the Out-patient Clinic.
He/She will be actively involved in community aspects of the service, including reviews of clients in the community and at voluntary/private sector residential facilities.
In conjunction with other members of the care team, the post-holder will be responsible for developing appropriate care plans to meet individual’s needs. This will include the prescription of appropriate medication, ensuring adequate monitoring and compliance with prescribed medication and keeping patients fully informed of the purpose, positive effects and any likely ill-effects of their prescribed medication.
If not already Section 12 (2) approved, the post-holder will be encouraged to seek approval under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983. He/she will be required to function in this capacity being involved in the assessment of patients under the Act, the writing of appropriate reports, and, as required, attendance at Managers and Tribunal Hearings.
The post-holder will be encouraged to participate, as appropriate, in managerial and administrative tasks associated with the running of the Rehabilitation Psychiatry Service.
The post-holder will be expected to take an active part in Clinical Governance within the Mental Health Programme.
The post-holder will be encouraged to contribute to staff development, teaching of junior staff and students, and research and audit pertaining to Acute Adult and Rehabilitation Psychiatry.
He/She will also be encouraged to develop the ability to access and use information services in order to practice evidence-based medicine.
He/She may be required to deputise from time-to-time for absent colleagues, so far as consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties. In particular, reciprocal cover between the Assertive Outreach and Rehabilitation Psychiatry Services will be required.
He/She may be required, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in emergency situations and unforeseen circumstances.
The post-holder will have the opportunity to be involved in specialist therapy areas; for example, individual, dynamic or cognitive behavioural therapy, or group work.
8. Other Duties:
8.1 The post-holder will be required to fully participate in annual appraisal and job planning discussions and comply with BMA agreed guidance on professional self-regulation.
8.2 The post-holder will be required to participate in the middle tier on-call rota which provides out of hours cover to the Crisis Intervention/Home Treatment Service. The on-call commitment is currently 1 in 8, with prospective cover, and is non-resident. This on-call tier is the first point of contact for the Crisis Home Treatment Team, involving support, advice, and as required, home assessments, and also providing support and advice to the psychiatric Specialty Registrar on-call
8.3 Reciprocal arrangements with colleagues for the care of patients and community services apply during periods of study and annual leave, or other unexpected absences when on duty.

Medical Qualifications
Full Registration with GMC
Higher Psychiatric Training
Participated in an approved training scheme (minimum 1 year)
Approval (or eligibility for approval) under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act
Part 1 MRC Psych or equivalent
Experience
3 years psychiatric experience
Experience of a specialist rehabilitation service
Evidence of working autonomously
Skills and Knowledge
Up-to-date knowledge of national strategies and development in psychiatric medicine
Knowledge of clinical audit procedures and demonstrate recent examples of involvement
Training skills and experience
Able to make decisions independently, but know when to seek advice
Research and Audit
Awareness of audit requirements
Previous participation in audit
Personal Attributes
Good writing and verbal communication skills
Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Able to act in a leadership capacity within a team when required
