Job Summary-Doctor Sexual Health job description

To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide all aspects of management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Contraception needs to support the Consultant in GUM, in the management of patients with HIV and to be involved in audit and research.

The post holder will work across both Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) and Sexual and Reproductive Health Specialties. Subject to previous experience it is expected that the post holder would work with minimal supervision and training will be given where appropriate to enable this.

1. Clinical Duties

Specialty Doctors will normally be clinicians with a serious commitment to the speciality. They will be expected to run routine outpatient clinics for the management of sexually transmitted infections, including testing and treatment, as part of a multiskilled team. All staff are expected to perform their duties in a non-judgmental manner, and very high levels of confidentiality must be maintained.

Emergency contraception and routine contraceptive advice is given by all medical staff. The post will provide a varied and challenging experience to a committed team player keen to adapt to meet the changing needs of the users of the service and the aspirations of National HIV and Sexual Health Strategies.

Adequate time for administration/audit has been allocated, with efficiency, skill acquisition, and support from the supervising consultant and service development in mind. The successful candidate would be strongly encouraged to work towards attaining the Diploma in GUM or HIV, Letters of Competence in Sub-dermal Contraceptive Implant Techniques (LOC SDI), Intra-uterine Techniques (LOC IUT) and Instructing Doctors (LOC MED), as part of their continuing professional development, if these have not already been achieved.
Key Tasks:

Professional Responsibilities include:

• To undertake examination, investigation and treatment of patients
• To support consultants in the management of patients with HIV
• To assess clients needs with regards to methods of contraception
• To teach and advise on effective use of chosen method of contraception and to evaluate appropriateness of chosen method
• To be proficient and maintain skills in the fitting of all methods of contraception
• To work as part of a team

• To provide medical support to non-medical staff
• To liaise effectively with other agencies (eg General Practice, Child Protection)
• To be available to answer telephone queries from clients, by returning calls at the end of the clinic session
• To be available to answer telephone queries from professional colleagues (doctors, nurses and pharmacists)
• To ensure that confidentiality regarding verbal, written and telephone communication is kept, in line with current policies and in accordance with the best interests of the client.
• To maintain accurate contemporaneous and legible records
• To undertake administrative tasks (eg letters, KC60 data)
• To ensure that the clinical notes are stored in locked cabinets
• To keep accurate statistical information on each patient
• To be prepared to see extra patients presenting as ‘emergencies’ within the stipulated clinic times
• To assist in development of policies and procedures for Sexual Health Staff
• To participate actively in research and audit activities of the department
• To submit monthly work returns and expenses claims as appropriate
• To submit timely sickness notification when necessary
• To submit six week in advance annual and study leave requests, the granting of which will be co-ordinated with that of other staff
• To undertake other appropriate duties as requested by the GUM Consultant and Clinical Lead/Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Health
• The post holder will deputise for colleagues in the event of their absence, this will include some additional evenings
• To visit patients who require admission

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will undertake the clinical duties of the consultant, in consultation with the Service Manager, when the consultant is on leave. The successful candidate would be expected and encouraged to increase his/her skills in the relevant clinical areas and undertake audit as identified by the consultant and service manager.

Education and Training

• To maintain professional competence and re-accreditation by attending continuing educational programmes as agreed through the appraisal process
• To fulfil the requirements for appraisal and licensing as set out by the Department of Health
• To participate in the regular Trust appraisal system
• To provide clinical training for nurses, medical students and doctors, as required
• To attend service and education meetings as required
• To complete mandatory training.

Suggested Job Plan

• Direct clinical hours – each GUM session is for 3 hours, Contraception session 2.5 hours
• CPD, Audit, Administration, Mandatory Training will be in addition, to be agreed with the Clinical Manager
• Travel time will also be considered if appropriate
• No on-call is attached to the post

This job plan is subject to change as agreed with the post holder and according to the needs of the service.

It may be necessary to reschedule the job plan, to ensure service needs are met. This will not affect the number of each type of session.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience-Doctor Sexual Health job description

Requirements

MBBS or equivalent
Diploma in GUM or HIV – attained or working towards
DFSRH and LOC in SDI, IUT and Instructing Doctors – attained or working towards

Experience
• 3 years general medical training
• 3 years experience in GUM/Contraception/gynaecology

Evidence of achievement
• Recognition of the central role of research in improving clinical care and increasing understanding
• Strong desire for participation in research
