The post holder will be one of a team of administrators providing clerical support to the Firearms & Explosives Licensing Officer and Senior Administrators, as required.
The postholder will be expected to perform duties in any of the tasks listed below with the aim of maintaining a multi-skilled team to operate efficiently and effectively within the Section.
Firearms Licensing Clerk
1. To interrogate the Police Intelligence systems in connection with the vetting of applications to establish whether there is any information relevant to the applicant which will then be passed to the Senior Administrator who will use the information to decide whether an applicant is a fit person to possessfirearms, shotguns and explosives.
2. To interrogate the Business Objects system and identify any certificate holders that have come to Police notice which could result in the revocation of their firearm/shotgun certificates.
3. To be responsible for a range of general clerical tasks in connection with the issue of firearm, shotgun and explosives certificates including:
To open, sort and distribute post received in the office
To receipt and bank cheques received in the office
To issue/renew/vary European Firearm Passes
To produce shotgun/firearm certificates
To perform a range of clerical duties within a centralised licensing section dealing with the issue of licences for firearms, shotguns and explosives.
To send out renewal packages and reminder letters
To take necessary action on correspondence relating to the acquisition/ sale of guns and the cancellation of records
To record and update onto the Firearms system receipt of all applications including referee forms
To identify records for weeding in accordance with National criteria-

4. To be a competent user of the computer system.
5. To respond to telephone calls from members of the public and police and give advice on firearms and explosives issues
6. To be aware of Policies on Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, Data Protection and comply with the legislation.
Education/ Qualifications Required
Essential: Maths and English at GCSE level or equivalent or previous working experience that shows the postholder has achieved a comparable level.
Desirable: Good standard achieved in a range of GCSE subjects or equivalent.
Experience Required
Essential: Experience of a busy office environment is important together with previous knowledge of receipting and banking procedures.
Desirable: Previous experience in dealing with telephone or customer care related enquiries.
