The experienced Health Care Assistant will work under the supervision of, and will assist the Registered Nurse in the provision of care and recording of information.
They will contribute fully as a member of the nursing team, and to the smooth running of the ward or department.
In conjunction with other members of the team establish and maintain effective communication with patients, visitors and staff.
Report all relevant information about patient and / or visitors to the appropriate registered nurse.
Assist in the efficient running of the ward/department as required.
Participate in meetings as necessary.
Maintain the confidentiality of information
Contributes towards good relationships within the work environment, which may impact on all patient/public contacts.
Orientate patients to the ward/department environment
Ensure the patients spiritual, cultural and personal needs are adhered to
Promote the privacy and dignity of patients
Clinical Risk
Be aware of and adhere to Policies and Procedures.
Be aware of Health & Safety Policies. Report any faults of equipment immediately to the nurse-in-charge.
Ensure high standards of patient documentation.
Is expected to gain competence in clinical activities within a set time frame
Patient Care
Carry out assigned patient care in support of and supervised by a registered nurse.
Undertake specified clinical activities according to competence and area requirements
Assist with and serve patients meals/special diets as agreed with trained nurses.
Assist with movement of patients.
Undertake escort and chaperone duties as required.
Assist in the care of deceased patients and provide support for the family and/or friends.
Ensure supervision and safe custody of patients’ property.
Undertake clinical observations of a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure
Observe and report changes in patients’ conditions to the registered nurse or team/shift co-ordinator.
Personal Development
Undertake In-Service training as required.
Identify personal training needs with a member of the senior nursing team
Undertake NVQ (CARE) Level 2
Resource management
Assist in maintenance of stock levels.
Assist in the maintenance of ward cleanliness.
Example of Some of the Clinical Activities To Be Undertaken
• Attend to patients’ hygiene and pressure area requirements
• Contribute to the care of unconscious patients
• Assist in maintaining patients’ nutritional needs
• Take blood glucose readings
• Contribute to the care of patients undertaking oxygen therapy
• Record 12 lead ECG
• Assist patients with their elimination requirements including care of catheters.
• Assist with the moving and handling of patients
No formal qualification necessary
Good written / verbal skills
Numerate
Good IT skills (e.g. ECDL)
Experience
Previous experience in ‘care’ setting
Working with the general public
