This is a full time consultant post in ophthalmology.

The successful candidate would be expected to take the lead in and provide services in primary care and high volume cataract surgery. Primary care clinics will take place both on-site and in the community and will provide a range of services including general ophthalmology and glaucoma in the community. These sub specialist areas reflect the department`s needs at the current time, however, the department expects that all staff adopt a flexible approach to work.

The job plan and the proposed timetable below reflects our best assessment of what the final plan will be based on 10 PAs with a 1:12 on-call commitment which attracts a Category B supplement.

THE SPECIALTY

Job Description Surgeon-Ophthalmic
The Academic Unit of Ophthalmology has established research interests in ocular immunology (Clinical and experimental autoimmune uveitis, corneal graft rejection, ocular mucosal immune system) corneal epithelial wound healing and epithelial cell migration in vivo and in vitro, the effects of ionising radiation on the normal and diseased eye (clinical and experimental), macular disorders and diabetic retinopathy.

The unit fosters and encourages collaborative projects with other University and NHS Departments.

A number of NHS consultants have their own research programmes collaborating with the Academic Unit and other outside departments where mutually advantageous.

The clinical facilities include ceiling mounted or floor standing Zeiss microscopes, with closed circuit TV display and recording facilities. Vitrectomy and phacoemulsification (Bausch and Lomb Millennium) equipment are also in use, with endolaser and indirect laser facilities.

The IOLMaster and ultrasound Biometry and B scan ultrasound are available in the outpatient department which also houses the Optometry department, contact lens clinic, LVA clinic, Orthoptic department, fluorescein angiography and anterior segment photography. HRT2 and OCT3 scanning and a Reichert Ocular Response Analyser are also available in out-patients.

We also provide a dedicated cataract clinic staffed by optometrists and nurses and a treatment centre for macular disease. There is also a 24 hour eye casualty department and a laser treatment suite.

The electro diagnostic department, carries out clinical and research duties in visually evoked potentials, electroretinography and electro oculography.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

A full range of Ophthalmology patients are admitted to the hospital and the appointee will be responsible for the management of patients admitted under his/her care.

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Ophthalmic service.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues and the Trust.

The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.

Research, Governance and Audit

There are close links with the University and has academic departments in the majority of its clinical specialties. There is active collaborative research between NHS and academic staff and NHS Consultants.

All normally-expected research facilities are available within the Medical School and other departments.

Research facilities are also available in the purpose-built Medical Research Centre on the campus. Anyone involved in research is required to adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.

Each member of the medical staff is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities within their directorate and each directorate has a Consultant nominated as Clinical Governance lead. The activities include, (but are not restricted to) audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence Based Practice.

The appointee may wish to take on other roles alongside their clinical role. Any positions offered by anyone outside the Trust (eg Training Programme Director, Regional College Advisor, Royal College Representative etc) must be discussed and agreed by the Specialty Lead in advance of the position being accepted, so that the impact upon the specialty can be fully considered and any job plan amendments undertaken should the additional role be accepted.

Professional qualifications [Job Description Surgeon-Ophthalmic]: Essential

FRCS, FRCOphth. or equivalent Desirable

Higher degree, ChM, DM, PhD or equivalent

Training Essential

Possession of CCST/ expected CCST within 6 months of proposed interview date or equivalent

Desirable-Completion of a cataract / anterior segment fellowship.

Knowledge Abilities/Experience-Essential

Full general ophthalmic surgical training with more than one years experience in high volume cataract surgery (8-10 case per session) and at least six months experience of primary care ophthalmology

Knowledge and experience in modern ophthalmology practice

Binocular single vision Desirable

Completed a management course

Evidence of willingness to participate in management within the NHS

Able to take overall responsibility for patients
