To perform a variety of clerical, technical and administrative tasks in assisting the legal staff.

Main responsibilities-Legal Assistant job description

The incumbent performs a variety of clerical, technical and

administrative tasks in assisting attorney's working in the following

areas: Criminal Tax, General Litigation, Tax Litigation, and TECHMIS

case processing.

Receives visitors and phone calls. Ascertains nature of requests and

directs callers to appropriate staff, or personally provides the

information desired when routine or procedural matters of the office

are involved. Determines what information can be divulged in

ascertaining the nature of call. Controls visitor's access and

implements security procedures.

Reviews all mail related to the assigned functional area and inputs

the appropriate information into the CASE subsystems.

Coordinates all incoming correspondence in his/her assigned

functional area(s).

Directly responsible for establishing procedures for the handling of all legal documents.

Reviews cases for any past history and associates this information with related files.

Inputs all actions concerning the cases into the CASE computer subsystems.

Provides all support staff in the office with information concerning new and revised procedures.

Produces a variety of written documents utilizing varied and advanced word processing software functions.

Assists attorney in preparation of cases including those for trial.

As assigned, provides secretarial duties for one or more attorneys.

Performs other duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities-Legal Assistant job description

GS-06: 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05

level in the Federal Service

GS-07: 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06

level in the Federal Service


Typing Proficiency:

Candidates must indicate typing proficiency on their applications. Applicants must be certified to type a minimum of 40

words per

minute.

1) SF-50, "Notification of Personnel Action", showing a position held with office automation (OA) skills within the last three (3) years; or

2) Copy of signed test results showing speed (wpm) and the

number of errors, dated within the last three (3) years. Test results

must be issued by and Office of Personnel Management authorized

organization to include local unemployment offices; or

3) Self certify by indicating typing speed on application

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Typing Proficiency Requirement:

This position requires a qualified typist with a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute (based on a 5-minute sample with three or

fewer errors).

Office Automation Proficiency Requirement:

Knowledge of office

automation hardware, software and other devices for improving the

efficiency of operations.

You must have experience or training using word processors, microcomputers, or computer terminals.

You also need to have

experience using a standard typewriter-style keyboard with additional function keys and you must have skill in operating related

equipment such as printers and modems. You must also have performed work using office automation systems, software, practices and

procedures.

Some examples of office automation software include electronic spreadsheet, database management, desktop publishing,

calendar, and electronic mail.
