Support the Clinical Illustration Manager/Chief Medical Photographer in providing a comprehensive photographic, illustration, design and audio/visual service to the organisation.
Photographing and filming patients, designing presentations for doctors and consultants, providing lecture material, a reprographics service, general printing, leaflet design and general filming and public relations photography and ophthalmic photography
Clinical photography in all its aspects, including: photography and video of patients in the studio, wards, clinics, operating theatres and post mortem rooms, as well as ophthalmic photography.
Reprography/flatbed copying radiographs, slides and other flat originals
General photography such as awards, social events, PR, documentary, equipment
and other medical instruments
Discussing and advising hospital staff about photographic issues

Physical and mental skills
Communicates complex, sensitive information. Requires empathy, reassurance and the ability to overcome barriers to understanding. Receives information concerning patient history, sensitive issues, requires persuasive reassurance skills, accommodates patients views and preferences with regard to cultural differences. Communicate with staff requiring tact and sensitivity.
Expertise within medical photography, with registration and degree, or relevant experience.
Follow colour management protocols in the digital image workflow, to ensure quality standards are met. Day to day clinical photography and routine allied clinical work. Provide technical assistance and advice to staff, clients, students and trainees.
Responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining quality working systems. Liaise with clinical staff to ensure a smooth flow of patients in the clinics. To assist the Clinical Illustration Manager/Chief Medical Photographer in the running of the department. Liaise with the Clinical Illustration Manager on issues relating to the department, and effectiveness of the medical photography and ophthalmology sections. Must be able to organise their own work, and work unsupervised.
Highly developed skills of hand eye coordination and accuracy in the provision of clinical photography. Manipulation of technical camera and lighting equipment. Recording in operating theatres and trauma require speed, dexterity and accuracy.
Responsibilities of the post holder-Medical Photographer
Day to day clinical photography and routine allied clinical work. To undertake ophthalmic photography, including fluorescein angiography, red-free, colour fundus and ocular coherence tomography and maintain the digital patient database.
Undertake photography for non-accidental injuries, be prepared to give statements to the police and to give evidence in a court of law if required.
To provide photographs for medico-legal and police evidence.
To undertake complex clinical photography of patients, requested by consultants, for clinical assessment, records, teaching, publication and research.
To record clinical training material using digital video equipment.
Freedom to Act
To prioritise work to aid efficient running of the department, taking responsibility for own photography and acting on own initiative. To support the Clinical Illustration Manager/Chief Medical Photographer. To act as a mentor to subordinate staff, including assistants.
Physical, mental and emotional effort required-Medical Photographer
A frequent requirement to move heavy equipment, such as lighting rigs. Photographic work involving the adoption of awkward positions in studio and on location.
Attend court cases as an expert witness, undertake diagnostic imaging to determine patient treatment, work in theatres, mortuaries and A&E.
Photographing traumatised and terminally ill patients, dead people, including babies and children, on location, in wards and the studio. Undertaking major incident photography.
Outline of working conditions
Occasional exposure to verbally aggressive patients and highly unpleasant working conditions, including exposure to body fluids and body odours. A high percentage of time working in front of a computer.
HND, City and Guild or equivalent in photography.
A high level of photographic ability with a proven track record.
An imaginative and creative mind.
Excellent standard of appearance and presentation to reflect the high profile nature of this role.
Ability to work with all professions throughout the Organisation and with colleagues in partner organisations involved in the management or provision of health and social care services.
Desirable
Some knowledge of desktop publishing.
Highly developed interpersonal, communications and organisational skills.
Skills in effective team working.
Basic telephone and computer skills, including Word, plus experience with specific software packages such as Adobe Photoshop
