Job Summary-Midwife job description

Working as one of a group of midwives to provide total midwifery care within either a hospital or community setting as part of an integrated service.

Main responsibilities-Midwife job description

CLINICAL

1 To possess the midwifery skills to undertake midwifery care to a named caseload of women.

2 To provide total care to a caseload of women in liaison with other team members.

3 To be responsible for the maintenance and development of her/his own clinical skills.

4 To support the development of midwifery practice and new roles within the service.

5 To assume responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in
  accordance with the Policies and Statutory Rules and Regulations.

PROFESSIONAL

1 To observe the Rules and Code of Conduct as laid down by the NMC.

2 To work within the policies and protocols and enable all members of the midwifery team to carry out care within these guidelines.

3 To maintain effective communication and working relationships within the team and between the team and other Health Care Professionals.

4 To be responsible for the maintenance and development of her own clinical skills and
maintain PREP requirements.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

1. To ensure that midwifery practice is in keeping with current research by assisting in the development of an evidence based culture and implementation of research and evidence based protocols and guidelines.

2. To assist in the maintenance, monitoring and evaluation of standards of care within the midwifery team and to assist in the implementation of recommendations from Government or Professional bodies and Patient Charter Standards in relation to maternity care.

3. To assist in the development of Health and Safety standards and the monitoring of these standards, ensuring that policies are adhered to and equipment is used correctly and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act.

4. To participate in clinical audit.

5. To assist in the achievement and monitoring of quality standards as stated within Essence of Care.

6. To participate in clinical incident reporting and facilitate changes to reduce risk.

7. To assist and support the continual review, development and improvement of maternity services.

EDUCATION

1 To participate in the teaching, preceptorship and mentorship of all students and new members of staff who join the team.

2 To participate in meeting the training needs of other midwives, students and support staff. By providing a suitable learning environment and by engaging in clinical teaching where appropriate.

3 To participate in the teaching and preparation for parenthood.

MANAGEMENT

1 To maintain a good rapport with mothers and visitors to the and facilitate this approach within the team.

2 To assist the Band 7 midwife in the co-ordination of the clinical activities of the team and to act up for them when required following appropriate training. (To be negotiated on Delivery Suite).

3 To assist with orientation programmes which familiarise new members of staff to the team.

4 To carry out regular Staff Appraisals of Band 5 midwives, midwifery assistants and clerical staff under the direction of the Midwifery Team Manager.

5 To maintain stores and equipment and ensure proper use.

6 To participate in a 24 hour on call arrangement whist working within the community team.

7 To report complaints, incidents and accidents to the Band 7 midwife and assist in their investigation and resolution.

8 To record and submit clinical activity and information as requested.

GENERAL

To carry out any other reasonable duties as may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post, to meet the needs of the service. This will include cover of appropriate duties during the absence of colleagues.

There will be a regular review of this job description, which as a minimum will be carried out annually by the responsible managers and the post holder.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience-Midwife job description

Qualifications:

Academic and/or Professional/ Vocational
Registered Midwife.

12 months post registration experience within both the ward and delivery suite areas.

Previous Experience

Special knowledge
Knowledge of current national initiatives and recommendations regarding maternity care.
