Monsoon Scientist Job Description

To contribute to the successful delivery of regional climate research projects, focusing primarily on the Asian and African summer monsoons.

  * Develop and deliver regional climate research projects working with wider science team to meet stakeholder requirements in Asia and Africa.
  * Prepare Project Reports for customers (funding agencies), and contribute to the publication of scientific papers based on the project outputs.
  * Work with the wider team to develop expertise in regional climates of south Asia and Africa, with a view to gain understanding and knowledge to engage stakeholders in the region effectively.
  * Develop and apply suitable tools for communicating climate impacts/risks and opportunities to a range of customers and government stakeholders.
  * Represent at stakeholder meetings, public seminars, scientific conferences. Provide climate advice and assistance to scientists and other stakeholders in developing countries.
  * Develop business with key customers in Asia and Africa, to contribute to the revenue target.

Essential

  * Understanding of climate information provided by the Met Office on seasonal-decadal-centennial time scales to various stakeholders. Background in climate/weather science, Physics or Maths is essential at post-graduate level or equivalent.
  * Experience of extracting, analysing, interpreting and displaying large volume of data. Evidence of writing scientific reports for customers or articles for peer-reviewed journals.
  * Good interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate and build working relationships with people outside own working team.
  * Constructive and flexible team player who is able to work effectively across various (but related) scientific disciplines.
  * Demonstrated ability to suggest ideas for research projects and suitable funding agencies for support.

Desirable

  * Knowledge of tropical/monsoon dynamics and experience of climate modelling research.
  * Understanding of how climate information is used for policy making in least-developed countries.
  * Experience of writing research proposals for funding agencies and working with customers/stakeholders to develop them.
