Main purpose of Job: Curatorial Assistants work as part of team that attends to the day to day care of the collections both on display and in storage. The duties are mainly practical. They include:
-checking and maintaining objects on display in the galleries
-caring for objects and archives in storage including the maintenance of databases
preparing cases and installing objects in gallery displays and special exhibitions
-assisting and supervising visitors to the Study Rooms
-assisting senior curators with the presentation of objects to students and the media
preparing, accompanying and installing objects loaned to exhibitions in other museums in Britain and abroad
-assisting with administrative tasks
Key Responsibilities [in order of priority]:
observing safe and secure practices in all aspects of object handling
ensuring secure but unobtrusive mounting of objects in display
maintaining good conditions within the displays and storage areas
ensuring accurate labelling and recording of objects in storage and during any moves
offering courteous, helpful service to visitors to the Study Rooms
ensuring the safety of objects during travel to loan venues and their proper installation
assisting senior curators to make full use of the collections in presentation and research
assisting with any duties involving the care and accessibility of the collections or items brought into the Museum for assessment
Curatorial Assistants must get to know the conditions and handling techniques which apply to different types of material. [cont right]
Education-levels & subjects
Good general education including GCSE and A levels
Specific technical/ professional skills & experience
Appreciation and basic knowledge of ancient objects and/or works of art.
Other
Must be able to work flexibly in a small team under supervision and have a good manner when dealing with others Publications record (if appropriate)
