Reporting to the Group Picture Editor the Picture Editor is responsible for the picture content of a variety of magazines.
This role involves researching a wide range of images and helping to manage the picture output.
The position also includes picture editing related specials and cover mounts.
Key Responsibilities: Picture Editor Job Description [cont]
Researching pictures from a variety of sources including record company, agencies, newspapers, the internet, magazines (including international) for all the strands attached to the magazine, both on and off the page eg Gossip emails.
Commissioning and directing a wide range of photo sessions including covers, features and fashion, finding studios, locations, props and booking make up and processing all necessary paperwork.
Liaising between departments such as marketing and buying to ensure picture requests are dealt with and essential information is passed on.
Attending editorial meetings and creative input for ideas for photos and features
Co-ordinating photo stories where appropriate booking models, hiring photographers, finding locations and directing weekend photo shoots approx. every 8 weeks

Using Bulletin Boards to get free digital publicity shots
Negotiating rates with picture agencies within the budgets of the magazines and clearing rights for usage
Responsibility for processing invoices and marking up picture costs on the various in-house systems.
Updating monthly photo rights online
Ensuring copyright forms are signed by photographers for all commissioned shoots.
Working on relevant Specials and picture-led covermount gifts
Maintaining an efficient transparency library and digital archive and ensuring pictures are safely returned where appropriate
Photography of still life
To comply with all relevant safety rules, procedures and guideline and to be aware of responsibilities under the safety policy
To comply with policies on Diversity and to apply the principles of the policy when carrying out the role
Strong relevant experience of working on a magazine picture desk
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Ability to multi task and prioritise work according to tight deadlines
Knowledge of Digital Asset Management system and understanding of picture copyright issues
Keen interest in photography and design, with knowledge of Adobe Photoshop 5, Acrobat Reader, Word and Excel software packages
Understanding of the aims and style of pre-teen and teen magazines and an appreciation of the subject matters
