Job Summary-Psychologist job description

To provide a clinical psychology service to clients (inpatient rehabilitation), as well as to their relatives or carers where appropriate, providing specialist psychological assessment and treatment to clients with severe and enduring mental health difficulties with complex needs and comorbid presentations, from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.

To supervise assistant psychologists and contribute to supervision of trainee clinical psychologists where appropriate, and offer advice and consultation on clients` psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service`s policies and procedures.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research relevant to the project and the service.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical:

To provide specialist psychological assessments of service users with severe and enduring mental health difficulties who may have complex and co-morbid presentations, using interview, formal psychometric and other assessment methods as appropriate.

To formulate and devise psychological treatment and management plans for referred service users with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, and to provide psychological treatment, using a range of specialist interventions appropriate to the service.

To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, to assist in the formulation, diagnosis and treatment of clients.

To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of service users.

To liaise with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, in the care provided to service users.

To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and support in a skilled and sensitive manner to relatives and carers of service users, where appropriate, to enhance the care provided to the service users.

Teaching, training, and supervision

To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.

To participate in an agreed programme of post-qualification training and professional development towards developing advanced knowledge and practice

To undertake training to develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and clinical supervision.

To provide professional and clinical supervision of assistant psychologists, as required, and where appropriate, to provide clinical supervision of individual cases of trainee clinical psychologists.

To contribute to the pre and post-qualification teaching of clinical and/or other applied psychologists, as appropriate.

To provide advice, consultation, training and supervision, where appropriate, to other health and social care staff working with the client group.

Management, policy and service development

To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the team`s operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.

To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing

Research and service evaluation

To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other team members.

To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.

To undertake project management, including audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop and evaluate service provision.

General

To ensure the development and maintenance of the highest personal standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the postholder`s professional and service manager(s).

To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology across the service, by exercising the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.

To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.

To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local Trust policies and issues of relevance to the service and client group, including in particular those relating to housing and benefits.

Education/Qualifications

Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society, or British Psychological Society Statement of Equivalence.

Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience

Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including community, primary care, outpatient and inpatient settings.

Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.

Experience of clinical psychological assessment and treatment of severe and enduring mental health difficulties.

Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.

Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.

Educational Supervision

Skills

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management.

Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.

Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.

Knowledge

Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.

Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).

High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.

Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health

Abilities

Ability to form good working relationships with others in a multidisciplinary setting.

Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.

Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice.
