BACKGROUND
To provide general / sub-specialist colorectal surgery services to the local population and to lead undergraduate surgical teaching.
The post will attract honorary lecturer / senior lecturer status.
The successful candidate will provide general surgical (nonvascular) services for the local population.
It is hoped that the candidate will bring both general and colorectal surgical experience and a commitment to medical education. A sub-specialty interest within colorectal surgery to compliment the team will be welcomed.
Teaching
The new Consultant / Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will be expected to lead the surgical training programme with assistance from a teaching lecturer and consultant colleagues for undergraduate students.
The teaching programme includes all stages of the undergraduate medical curriculum from 6th form students to MB BS including re-sits. Third year students are taught a 4 month foundations of clinical practice programme. Final year students attend the surgical firms and shadow the foundation doctors.
Job Description Surgeon-Colorectal
The general surgical unit attracts a number of surgical trainees at all levels of training and the successful candidate will be expected to take part as either an educational or clinical supervisor within the new MMC framework. In addition opportunity arises to teach on the various post-graduate training courses currently organised annually.
Audit
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the ordinary administrative duties of a Consultant post. This will include participation in professional audit and business planning and related activities.
There is a monthly departmental directorate and audit meeting held in conjunction with the other general surgical consultants.[cont right]
The successful candidate will be expected to take advantage of continuing professional development. The Medical Director holds the budget centrally and all reasonable requests for study leave have been honoured to date and funded within the allowances contained with the Medical and Dental Whitley Council and its successors.
Appraisal
Annual appraisals are mandatory for all Consultants and are carried out by the Clinical Director. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.
Managerial Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the administrative and managerial duties of a consultant post. This will include participation in professional audit and business planning for the department including attendance at the quarterly vascular business planning meetings.

The Trust regards control of healthcare-associated infections as a high priority. The appointed Consultant will be expected to promote high standards of infection control practise among the junior doctors he/she supervises.
Job Plan
The initial contract will be for the 10 PA job plan. This may be increased / altered by mutual consent between the appointee and the Clinical Director on behalf of the Medical Director. This will normally be three months after the commencement of the appointment.
The job plan will then be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultant`s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives
