Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in lower limb surgery
JOB PURPOSE
Provide lower limb surgery and contribute to general orthopaedics and trauma care of the population
The post-holder will participate fully in all elements of the Orthopaedic Service, which is organised into the provision of trauma and elective work.
Be involved in cross-site working between the various hospitals
Job Description Surgeon-Orthopaedic
Provide general trauma and orthopaedic services and be involved in the on-call rota with other colleagues, supported by junior medical staff.

Prevention and control of hospital acquired infection by ensuring close liaison with the Trust`s control of infection department.
Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
Implementation of Trust Risk Management strategy and understand implications of same within area of work.
Compliance with Blood Transfusion policy to ensure a safe service is provided to patients. to be accountable for implementation of Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that he/she is responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety
Job Plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director, on behalf of the Medical Director, 3 months after the commencement date of the appointee.
The job plan for the first 3 months will be based on the provisional timetable shown below. The job plan for the elective sessions initially compromises 5 fixed PAs including 2 main theatre and one day case unit list, together with 2 out-patient clinics including one for the Consultant`s special interest.
Provisional Timetable
It is anticipated that there will be three elective lists per week, a fracture clinic and a special interest clinic.
Job Description Surgeon-Orthopaedic
Trauma services are provided by two consultants on-call on a one week in six basis, ensuring direct consultant input into the care of the newly admitted trauma patient. There is a weekday fracture clinic and rehabilitation beds.
There is all day dedicated trauma theatre sessions 7 days a week and a fracture clinic 6 mornings (not Sundays) per week.
The weekday timetable for the on-call consultants and their teams commences with a morning ward round and trauma meeting, fracture clinic or trauma list either a.m. or p.m. depending upon the on-call team (A or B).
Teaching and Training
Job Description Surgeon-Orthopaedic
The Orthopaedic Department contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in association with the University. In addition to department training of junior staff, there is an active Postgraduate Education on site. The following RCS approved courses are held at either site:
ATLS courses are held three-four times per year
Critical Care Courses are held twice per year
An annual Spinal Symposium has commenced this year.
The department has a weekly `Fracture Forum` teaching session, and a weekly formal session of seminars, case presentation an audit. There are 2 specialised laminar-flow operating theatres, one of which may alternatively be used for day Surgery with its own self contained Day Unit accommodating up to 12 cases in a session.
The post holder will be expected to participate/instruct on these courses and will be invited to lecture/teach on the Undergraduate Programme and on the MSc Orthopaedic Course as honorary Lecturer.
Study & Training
The applicant is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose, and the appointee will be entitled to apply to the Medical Director for a contribution to funding of this activity.
There is an active Postgraduate Medical Centre and a well-stocked library on both sites.
Research
The applicant will be encouraged to undertake ethically approved research and contribute to local and national data collection where necessary.

Qualifications-Essential
Full GMC (London) registration and meets the requirements of the GMCs `Good Medical Practice`; CCT in Orthopaedics and Trauma (or within 6 months from appointment on Specialist Register with GMC);
FRCS (T & Orth) or equivalent;
Fellowship trained
Desirable
An additional higher qualification relevant to the specialty
MD, PhD or equivalent
Clinical Experience-Job Description Surgeon-Orthopaedic Essential
Specialised technical skills in lower limb;
Comprehensive knowledge in trauma;
Evidence of continuing medical education;
Trained at a minimum of 5 years as specialist registrar or equivalent;
Understands clinical risk management
Management and Administrative Experience-Essential
Up to date Trauma Management courses attended (AO courses etc); Willingness to participate in Management duties and activities within the NHS;
Good organisational skills with a willingness to lead in developing/managing trauma clinical services;
Evidence of having completed the clinical audit loop and guiding junior staff to undertake the same;
Understand how health service reforms affect clinical Practice
Teaching Experience-Essential
Ability, enthusiasm and willingness to teach and mentor trainees and other staff (nursing, management, undergraduates etc).
Research Experience-Job Description Surgeon-Orthopaedic-Desirable
Evidence of research involvement including publications in peer reviewed journals (e.g. prizes or scholarships)
Other Attributes-Essential
Excellent inter-personal skills to deal within a clinical and non clinical setting;
Able to enthuse, motivate and lead others; Ability to work in co-operation with the other consultants and other professionals in a sensitive and effective manner;
Able to organize and prioritise workload being aware and responsible of own limitations;
Being a team player, flexible to respond to changing circumstances and engage in NHS strategies (e.g. service redesign to achieve 18 week target)
