The post holder is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. The post holder will deliver quality care at all stages of the patient pathway developing and maintaining competence. Teaching, supervision and support of new and junior staff will be an integral part of the role.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder is required to work as part of a team including nurses, medical and HCA staff. The post holder will co-ordinate and teach, under supervision, as appropriate, other members of the team ensuring agreed standards of nursing practice are maintained. The post holder will continually review the effectiveness of the care, being given and will help develop and recognise the importance of observational skills in relation to patient care in the department
1. To ensure delivery of quality care in accordance with policies and procedures.
2. Assist in the management of the patient pathway from pre-op to discharge and subsequent follow up telephone call, ensuring effective channels of communication.
3. Adheres to procedures for reporting of incidents and complaints, assisting senior staff to develop action plans to reduce risk of reoccurrence
4. To use all resources in an appropriate and cost effective manner.
Quality-Surgical Nurse job description
1. Act as patients’ advocate at all times.
2. To participate at departmental level in the delivery of the clinical governance and risk management agenda.
3. To develop and maintain effective communication systems with all personnel.
4. In collaboration with senior staff, participate in clinical audit ensuring standards are continually reviewed and enhanced.
Personal and Professional Development
1. Participate in Appraisal and Personal Development Planning that meets personal and service objectives.
2. To assume responsibility for personal and professional development of self, enhancing individual performance to deliver department objectives.
3. To accept responsibility for own NMC registration and practice in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and PREP requirement.
4. To practice in accordance with all health and safety legislation ensuring attendance at annual statutory training.
5. To attend unit meetings, disseminating information appropriately.
Research and Service Development
1. To keep abreast of new health care related developments.
2. In collaboration with senior staff, ensure that clinical practice is evidence based and regularly benchmarked against best practice.
3. Assist in the updating of relevant clinical policies, protocols and procedures in line with current research and evidence based practice.
4. To assist with the implementation and review of Integrated Care Pathways within the clinical area.
Education/Training-Surgical Nurse job description
1. In conjunction with the senior members of the department, provide an environment conducive to learning. Assist with development of new and junior members of staff.
2. Assists with the introduction of newly appointed staff to their duties.
3. Demonstrates a positive and enthusiastic approach in order to maintain high morale and motivation within the department.
4. Maintain and develop own professional knowledge.
5. Accepts responsibility for developing competence in relation to the medical devices he/she will be expected to use.
Other duties
1. Participates in programmes of clinical trials of new equipment and supplies and in the evaluation and serviceability of existing equipment. Co-operates in research procedures and clinical audit
2. The post holder must at all times maintain the confidentiality of all patient data including electronic data in line with the Data Protection Act.
3. To provide short-term cover for colleagues during periods of leave.
4. To ensure that all standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of care to all whom come into contact with services provided by Hospitals .
