IT Network Infrastructure Manager Job Description responsible for keeping the estate of APs & Switches up to date and replacing them when necessary. The network is constantly growing as end-users require more APs, Switches & Infrastructure Cabling.


They will work closely with network support partners to ensure this growth is delivered on time and to the required specification. The IT Network Infrastructure Manager will take the lead in making access port configuration changes and troubleshooting network issues that come in via the ticketing system.


Should have existing skills with wired and wireless equipment such as Cisco, Juniper, Aruba or similar. They will be responsible for normal operational running, administering, troubleshooting, and maintaining the wired and wireless networks.


Key responsibilities-IT Network Infrastructure Manager


Customer Services and Support

1. Provide a high level of professional support to end-users and other IT Services staff.


2. Assist IT staff in troubleshooting unusual network problems.


3. Work on tickets raised through the Service Desk.


4. Work closely with other members of the IT Services to coordinate upgrades and any other ongoing changes to departmental network switches.


5. Build strong personal links with others (e.g. staff across IT Services, facilities managers, contractors, external contractors) to ensure that the Edge Network upgrades are carried efficiently and out effectively.


6. Work closely with relevant user representatives to inform them of new installs, replacements and upgrades and take advice on scheduling such works.


7. Manage all change control activities relating to upgrades coordination with other teams to minimise impact and ensure the upgrades are conducted in a timely manner.




Analysis, Reporting and Documentation


1. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of Network devices, stock levels and available budget.


2. Identify end-of-sale and end-of-life products and plan accordingly for their phased removal.


3. Provide inventory reports to the Head of IT and AV on the current Network switch fleet.


4. Report to Head on schedules of planned works, works in progress, and outcomes.


5. Keep meticulous records, diagrams, and documentation, using Networks’ preferred tools.


6. Maintain a managed archive of manufacturer documentation, firmware releases, inventories, reports and schedules.



Planning and Organising


1. Plan and implement, using standard procedures and processes, all aspects of work, on a rolling basis, needed for the continuous upgrade of the Network, i.e. prioritisation, materials, staff availability, impact on core activities (such as Critical Dates), other IT Services changes. The IT Network Infrastructure Manager will work with the rest of the team as part of the overall.


2. Manage the fleet of switches throughout their lifetime, i.e. secure quotations, raise orders, undertake delivery, testing, configuration and installation, undertake ongoing management, manage their removal, wiping, and secure disposal.


3. Arrange replacements for failed devices that are under warranty or on support contracts. Raise support queries with vendors and support providers as necessary to fix faults and track to a successful resolution.


4. Work in a safe manner at all times, observing any hazard warnings, environmental risks, and dangers. Develop safe ways of working in accordance with Health and Safety advice and training.


5. Infrastructure requires regular maintenance and is taken offline outside of normal working hours. This position requires that the post holder is available for this work on request outside of these hours.



Problem solving


1. Perform troubleshooting to assist in prioritising switch upgrades. Diagnose and fix a variety of network problems with user equipment, cabling, network switches and fibre optics.


2. Identify opportunities, by rationalising devices and/or installing fibre, to improve the topology and performance of departmental networks. Continuous Improvement.


3. Keep abreast of industry trends and available equipment models, and identify possibilities for alternative and upgraded equipment.


4. Assist in developing tools for automating network monitoring, configuration creation, inventorying/auditing, and anomaly detection.


5. Proactively, via training and self-learning, develop new skills that advance the capability of the team and self to provide an ever-better service. General responsibilities

Skills Knowledge and Experience-IT Network Infrastructure Manager Job Description


Essential

• A good first (undergraduate) degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g., computer science) or equivalent experience.


• Experience of Layer-2 networking and hold, or be actively working towards, a CCNA (or equivalent) qualification.


• Experience in managing network hardware (CISCO, Aruba, Juniper or similar) and operating systems, including their installation and configuration.


• Knowledge of transmission media e.g. optical fibre, wireless and associated standards e.g. Cat5e, CAt6A.


• Practical and theoretical understanding of typical network technologies, including VLANs, BGP, OSPF/ISIS, Multicast, IPv4, IPv6, Firewalls, and VPN solutions.


• Experience in managing supplier relationships well at both a service and technical level.


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience in producing clear technical documentation, including scope of work, project plans and migration strategies.


• Demonstrable experience of prioritising workload and working to tight deadlines with excellent attention to detail and the ability to meet targets.


Desirable


• Experience in the management of NAC systems such as Aruba ClearPass.

• Experience in configuring and using common Monitoring Systems such as SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, etc.
