Laboratory Manager Job Description to have overall responsibility for the organisation and preparation of the student practicals within the designated area.

To oversee the laboratories and associated technical provision and to contribute and assist in the development of student projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Key responsibilities-Laboratory Manager Job Description


1. To manage the designated technical staff, including PDRs, recruitment and selection, performance management and other pastoral issues and team meetings.


2. To act as deputy to the Technical Services Manager, taking responsibility for all areas in his/her absence.


3. To organise annual service contracts for laboratory equipment.


4. To ensure technical staff, within area of responsibility, prepare timely practicals supporting the programme areas and, when required, assist with classes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.


5. To have extensive range of laboratory skills and knowledge to ensure all the undergraduate and postgraduate practicals are delivered to a very high standard.


6. To undertake demonstrations and offer technical support for practical classes in laboratories and instruction and supervision of project students.


7. To work with other members of the team to organise workloads, and ensure timely and sufficient availability of equipment and space.



8. To have overall responsibility for instrumentation in the laboratories.


9. To ensure the maintenance of equipment and organise repair where reasonable.


10. To monitor and organise replenishment of stocks of specialised class materials.


11. To assist academic staff and technical staff in the development and testing of new and revised practical classes for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.


12. To ensure that all laboratory environments are maintained to the highest standard of order and cleanliness in line with both University and Health and Safety regulations. To write COSHH and Risk assessments in specialised areas.


13. To support research activities in Faculty.


14. To attend programme area meetings and work with the Programme Leaders and other members of the staff to ensure the highest standards of student experience in practical work.


15. To assist with the organisation/set up for Applicant Days, Open Days and other outreach activities for the Faculty.


16. Any other duties that may be required from time to time commensurate with the salary grade.



Knowledge Skills Experience Education-Laboratory Manager Job Description


Essential Education /Training

A good honours degree in a biological discipline or extensive appropriate laboratory experience


Essential Relevant Experience

  • Substantial, demonstrable laboratory experience in a relevant discipline in an HE environment

  • Substantial experience in line managing a team of technical staff

  • Proven ability in motivating and organising a team of technicians successfully

  • Good understanding and previous experience of implementing health and safety regulations and legislation, risk assessments and CoSHH, in relation to a laboratory environment

  • Experience of obtaining and managing service contracts

  • Experience and working knowledge of a wide range of Biomedical laboratory equipment and techniques

  • Excellent IT skills relating to a laboratory environment.

  • Excellent presentational skills

  • A flexible approach to working. Able to work occasional evenings and weekends to support open days and other student events



Essential Special Requirements

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organisational, time management and prioritisation skills

  • Able to move laboratory equipment

  • The successful applicant will be subject to a background disclosure check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before any appointment can be confirmed


Desirable Relevant Education / Training

  • H&S qualification.

  • Interest in a wide range of research actvities. Including knowledge of specialist techniques.

  • Experience of performance management

  • Budget management experience

  • Desirable Relevant Skills and Aptitudes

  • Knowledge of micriobiology techniques.

  • Experience of delivering tuition/supervising classes to students
